Less than an hours drive from Cape Town lies the magnificent region of the Cape Winelands. The area comprises fertile valleys, orchards and vineyards dotted with historic villages and gracious houses, built in typical Cape Dutch style underneath rugged and majestic mountain ranges. Today, around 110 000 hectares of the Cape is under vine. The wines produced in this region have become world-famous and wine tasting at the numerous award-winning wine estates has become a popular activity for locals and tourists alike.
Four areas dominate as must-see and experience Winelands regions: Franschhoek, the French corner, Stellenbosch, the historically rich and vibey university town, Paarl, the more mature and conservative sister of the three, and Constantia, the original Cape Winelands, closest to Cape Town.
